Dealing with a Disability

Adjustable Beds
Make Living With a Disability More Restful

For those with a disability, an adjustable bed can make a big difference. Many people are confined to their beds for long periods of time. By being able to adjust the bed, these people can enjoy activities such as television watching and eating without having to lie flat on their backs. A hospital bed is an adjustable bed that can be raised and lowered in addition to the adjustments of the head and the foot.

Large Adjustable Beds

For larger people, adjustable beds are available in bariatric sizes. (Bariatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the treatment and prevention of obesity.) Larger adjustable beds are also available which can be shared by married couples, with each being able to adjust his or her side to the position desired. An electric adjustable bed in a large size can easily cost over $4000, so it is important to know what options you desire when you are shopping for such a bed.

Bed Adjustments

Some of the adjustments a bed should be able to make are for the head to be raised, the knees to be raised, and the feet to be elevated. Having the knees elevated along with the head and upper body can take a lot of pressure off the lower back and make resting and sleeping more comfortable for those with back problems.

Mattress Materials

Adjustable bed Mattresses can be made of a variety of materials. Some are filled partially with air, which can be extremely comfortable as it cradles the body. Others are made of visco-elastic foam or latex, for support with a soft touch. Still others have coils in the mattress. On the outside, many adjustable beds are designed to look attractive with modern decor, and not just look like a hospital bed.

Improving conditions

There are a number of conditions that can be improved, or at least made more comfortable, by the adjustments made on one of these beds. For instance, a person with a hiatal hernia often cannot sleep in a flat position without getting heartburn, which can be very painful. Sometimes conditions like arthritis respond well to being able to adjust the bed. Varicose veins are improved by elevating the feet so that the blood can circulate more freely.

While an adjustable bed can make sleeping more comfortable, you must watch out for outrageous claims in the advertising of many of these companies. A truly therapeutic bed will be designed to reduce the amount of bed sores and skin breakdown experienced by the patient. Few beds can truly claim to do that.

Extra Features

Some adjustable beds offer extra features, such as heat and vibrating massage. These accessories can truly make a difference in a person's circulation, and can help you rest when you have been overdoing it. However, you should not fall for the old adage that firmer mattresses are always better for your back. They provide support, but for some individuals, the pressure points they cause are just as uncomfortable as a bed that lacks support.

Adjustable Bed Brands

Several brands that make adjustable beds are Restapedic, Golden Technologies, Med-Lift, and StroMatic. Waterbeds are considered therapeutic by some, but they don't provide much support for people who are getting older.
