The rules change so much it’s easy to get confused about exactly how to eat healthy and get the proper nutrition. Low-fat? Low-carb? High-fiber? It’s hard to keep up with what is the right way to eat. The Standard American Diet (SAD) isn’t working. Although there are plenty of diets available on the market we are becoming a fatter nation. Maybe it’s the emphasis on the finality of dieting. Many people falsely assume that they need to be very strict on a diet for a specific period of time, and then expect to go back to eating the way they did before the diet at some point. Healthy Eating Ignoring the fads and sticking to basic nutritional
principles will help clear the confusion. Healthy eating isn’t
about following a trend or a diet plan. It is about learning basic
principles of nutrition and incorporating them into your lifestyle. In its simplest essence, a diet should be looked upon as a modification of the way we eat instead of an experiment in self-torture. Healthy eating differs from a diet in that the changes you make are long-lasting, instead of temporary. Eating for health, instead of for convenience, is all about making small changes that make a big difference. While diets require you to drastically change your eating habits and totally deprive yourself, healthy eating preaches that moderation is key. Think about it this way. We all know that cheesecake, although decadent and delicious, is not something that should be on the menu every day. Someone who is constantly on a diet will deprive themselves of treats until finally one day they will breakdown and eat half a cheesecake. Someone who is dedicated to healthy eating will eat a small piece of cheesecake from time to time. Although a lot of people may think that sweets or other treats are “bad,” there is nothing wrong with allowing yourself a moderated portion. Vitamins and Minerals A good guideline for eating healthy is to look for foods that contain lots of vitamins and minerals. If you eat a broad variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and dairy products then you will not need to take vitamins. Relying on vitamin supplements can cause you to avoid eating properly. A good measure of health is to take a multivitamin every day, but excessive supplements really aren’t necessary. Water Intake Drinking more water is a simple and effective step toward living a healthier life. It is recommended that you drink eight to ten glasses of water a day, and even more if you drink caffeine. Water helps replenish our bodies and keep all of our organs running correctly. Dehydration can cause headaches, body aches and poor sleep. In fact, many common problems like fatigue and depression can be helped when you get the right amount of water. Quality Foods Healthy living begins with healthy eating, and that starts with focusing your diet on natural foods. If you have an organic grocery store nearby, it would be beneficial to buy your produce there. You can also get a better quality of food by shopping and comparing at the grocery stores in your area. Find out which stores have higher quality produce and meats, and then make it a point to shop there. These little steps will make a big difference in your health.
