Lasik - Laser Surgery or Laser Vision Correction.
Laser vision correction is becoming an increasingly popular option for vision correction. Lasik is the most popular version of this laser eye surgery. The term Lasik is derived from the term laser assisted in situ keratomileusis. This Lasik procedure is one in which a laser is used to modify the shape of the eye in a manner which can correct vision. In most cases those who undergo laser eye correction will be able to function without other corrective measures such as eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, this procedure is not effective for everyone and some patients may require additional surgeries.

As previously mentioned laser vision correction involves the use of lasers to correct vision. In this procedure a flap is cut in the cornea to allow access to the cornea. This is necessary because changing the shape of the cornea has the effect of correcting vision. Prior to the actual laser eye surgery the patient will be evaluated and the surgeon will take a number of dimensions necessary for calibrating the laser for use during the surgery. This data is necessary to ensure the laser is set up properly to reshape the cornea in the most efficient manner. During the procedure the laser is used to reshape the cornea after the flap is cut. Once the cornea is reshaped the flap is replaced and allowed to heal naturally.

Those who undergo laser vision correction should plan on spending a day or two protecting their eyes immediately after the surgery. The flap is not secured by any mechanical or physical means making it essential that the patient ensure the flap is not disturbed until it heals fully. This may involve sleeping with protective goggles to ensure the eye is not accidentally rubbed against the sheets or pillows, refraining from exercise and avoiding any potentially jarring activities.

In opting for laser eye surgery patients should do a great deal of research on the subject before selecting an eye surgeon and consenting to the laser surgery. First the patient should have a consultation with their eye doctor to determine whether or not they are an ideal candidate for the procedure. This is important because Lasik may not be capable of correcting the vision deficiency of the individual. If the patient is deemed to be an ideal candidate they should ask a number of questions such as:

• Will vision be fully corrected after the eye surgery or will eyeglasses still be required?
• What are the risks involved in laser surgery?
• Will additional eye surgeries be required?
• What are the success rate statistics for patients with similar vision problems?

The answers to these questions should be compared to the patient’s goals in undergoing laser eye correction. If the answers to these questions are satisfactory it is time to begin searching for a laser eye surgeon.

In selecting an eye surgeon, patients should look for a laser surgeon who specializes in Lasik or the desired method of laser vision correction. It is also ideal to select a surgeon who has a great deal of experience, completes a large number of surgeries annually and has a high success rate.
