Skin Conditions and Skin Care

Psoriasis Skin Care

Psoriasis is a skin condition which is beleived to be a genetic disorder caused by triggers in the immune system. Psoriasis may manifest itself in either the skin or the joints. Psoriasis which causes lesions on the skin and plaque psoriasis are two of the most common. Plaque psoriasis causes lesions on the skin which are inflamed and covered with silvery scales. In most cases psoriasis affects only a small percentage of the skin and is considered to be relatively mild. However, some individuals suffer from more severe cases where moderate to large areas of the surface of the skin is affected.

Who is at Risk for Psoriasis?

The exact causes of psoriasis are not known, however, scientists believe the disorder is most likely genetic in nature. Furthermore, scientists also believe the genetic defect which causes psoriasis may be linked to the immune system. In those not afflicted by psoriasis the cells on the surface of the skin typically regenerate every 28-30 days and as the cells mature the surface cells are sloughed off. However, in those with psoriasis the skin cells mature every 3-4 days and make their way to the surface of the skin. The existing surface cells do not fall off and it creates a situation where there is a build up of excess cells. These cells form the lesions which are evident in those with psoriasis.

Psoriasis is not contagious. The lesions may appear serious but in reality they are not. The lesions are not open wounds or infectious. Those who come in contact with an individual with psoriasis are in no danger of becoming affected.

Treatment of Psoriasis

Treating psoriasis can be quite difficult. There are many different treatments and products which can be used to treat psoriasis. The condition cannot be cured but it can be managed through a well planned strategy. The types of treatments and products often used to treat psoriasis include:

Topical treatments – topical treatments are usually prescribed in mild cases of psoriasis. Some common products include anthralin, dovonex, salicylic acid, tar, tazorac and topical steroids.
Phototherapy – a treatment method where the skin is exposed to ultraviolet light. This method is usually employed for cases of psoriasis which are mild and localized.
Systematic treatments – the use of drugs, usually orally administered, to combat psoriasis. This method is usually used in cases of moderate psoriasis which do not respond to topical or phototherapy treatments.
Dietary treatments – although there is little scientific evidence to support the theory of a relationship between diet and psoriasis, many individuals claim their condition may improve with certain foods and exacerbate with others. Personal experimentation may be involved to determine which type of diet is most therapeutic for psoriasis. In experimenting with different foods, patients should exercise caution not to adversely affect their overall health.

Buying and Comparing Psoriasis Treatment Products

Most psoriasis treatment products are available by prescription only.  Patients should discuss the treatment options with their doctor before making a decision on which treatment products to try. If a particular product is not working well, the doctor and patient can try new products or strategies until a reliable treatment method is found.

Psoriasis treatment products can be expensive.   Before having a prescription filled, the patient should talk with the doctor or pharmacist to determine if there are any generic medications which can be used.  These generics are usually much more affordable than the name brand medications.
